--Deal is first major construction contract for Brookfield in Scotland--
Brookfield Constructions UK Ltd has been awarded the multi-million pound contract to deliver the new South Glasgow Hospitals complex – the biggest design and construction project in Scotland. The announcement was made by Cabinet Secretary for Health and Well-being, Nicola Sturgeon, on behalf of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
The £840million super-hospital will be built on the site of the existing Southern General Hospital site in the South West of the city. The publicly funded development, scheduled for completion in 2015, will give Glasgow one of the most advanced adult acute services hospitals in the UK and will be the biggest critical care complex in Scotland. The construction contract is worth £670 million.
The plans include the provision of a new Sick Children’s Hospital for the West of Scotland which will replace the current Yorkhill Children’s Hospital. The new facility will provide beds for 250 children, accident and emergency services and a full range of in-patient and day case paediatric services.
Ashley Muldoon, Executive Director for Brookfield Europe and Managing Director for Brookfield Constructions, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been chosen as the contractor for the new South Glasgow Hospitals project which will be one of the most advanced medical facilities in Europe.
“Brookfield Constructions is a UK company but this project marks our first major construction project in Scotland and we are looking forward to developing our presence north of the border. Where possible sub-contracting opportunities will be advertised to local small to medium businesses. We will also offer jobs and training to locally recruited apprentices and people.
“The company has considerable experience within this sector working on projects such as Peterborough City Hospital, which is on schedule for completion next year.”
The new acute care hospital, which will be the first part of the development to go ahead, will have 1,100 beds, in single-room accommodation, along with 20 modern operating theatres and a laboratory block providing biochemistry, haematology and blood transfusion services.
An estimated 110,000 patients are expected to come through the hospitals doors every year.
It will be home to major specialised services such as renal medicine, transplantation and vascular surgery.
The project will be paid for through public funding with the costs being met by the Scottish Government and the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Trust.
It is estimated that the project will create around 2,500 jobs. The new hospital is also set to help regenerate the surrounding areas of Shieldhall, Govan, Cardonald and Linthouse, and space has been set aside at the site for further development.
Brookfield plan to establish a Scottish base and are expected to create a number of construction jobs as a result of the contract.
Nightingale Associates are the architects for the project. Other members of the professional team commissioned by Brookfield include medical planners Tribal, landscape architects Gillespies, civil and structural engineers WSP and mechanical and electrical engineers ZBP.
Project Director on the development will be Glasgow born Ross Ballingall, director of Brookfield Constructions UK.
